ERO Presents Special: The Printed Maps of Essex, 1576-1805

Speaker Peter Walker for this talk which covers the history of maps of Essex from the very first printed map in 1576 up to the first one from (what would later be renamed as) the Ordnance Survey in 1805.
It includes all of the actually surveyed maps plus some notable ones from the 100 or so others that were made by copying the surveyed maps. Peter will also discuss as to why and how they were made, and features many images of the surveyed and other maps, plus a small display of the more notable examples from the ERO’s collection of printed maps.
Peter Walker is a retired accountant who has been collecting and studying maps of Essex for over 25 years, and assisted in cataloguing the ERO’s collection of printed maps of Essex; he also wrote Printed maps of Essex from 1576 - the Catalogue of printed Maps of Essex at ERO. He has presented his talk on Essex maps at over 20 societies around Essex.
